Bilateral cataract blindness accounts for about 50% of all cases of avoidable blindness in our local communities in Nigeria. Blindness is a tough predicament particularly in resource scarce communities. To be blind in our rural communities in Africa sure and certain poverty with all its attendant consequences. Targeting cataract blindness  improves the overall economic outlook of local communities by making the hitherto blind "income earners again". Our expert medical staff are committed to providing the highest level of care to our patients. With years of experience and training, they use the latest techniques and technologies to ensure the best outcomes possible outcomes.

Our community/patient-centred approach to healthcare ensures that each patient receives personalized attention and care. We believe in working closely with our patients in their communities to develop a treatment plan tailored to their specific peculiarity and needs. Glaucoma accounts for about 13% of all avoidable blindness in our communities second only to cataract blindness. However glaucoma blindness occupies "special status" because any resulting blindness can not be reversed as is possibly in the case with cataracts.

The approach we have adopted is education of the people during outreaches explaining the disease, consequences of inadequate treatment and a clear prescription of the treatment modalities available. For the rural- riverine dwellers we advocate surgery because of the fear of non compliance with prescribed eye drops that are not readily available.

Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation - Your Trusted Healthcare Partner

  • The target one million (1,000,000) population of the foundations blindness prevention initiative are the peoples (Itsekiri, Ijaw and Ilaje) of the rivers in the Niger-delta regions of Nigeria. Access to these communities is usually down any of the many tributaries feeding into the Atlantic ocean. Not many professionals want to venture into this tough watery terrain preferring instead to practice in major cities with the attendant ease. Life for the locals is tough made more so because of pollution from crude oil exploration. You have to go to appreciate the suffering of these people. They live in homes built on stilts above water already polluted by crude oil from which they must scratch a living.
  • Someone must go. At Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation we have designed a fit for purpose smart, nimble and agile team of RURAL RIVER EYE SURGEONS assisted by optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and volunteer eyecare personnel that undertakes year round outreaches and performing the much needed orthodox cataract operations in two of our fit for purpose surgical suites at Tsekelewu (Poluopubo) on the Olero creek and at Ogheye community on the Benin river or at  any other rural communities, thus obviating the at times 2-3 hours boat journey to the closest medical facility. We are committed to eradicating avoidable blindness.

We are truly appreciative of the international support from Imani Bridges Inc USA. Time has gone by so quickly, its 10 years of unbroken and dedicated service. thankfully we have established a modern surgical theatre in our Badagry facility for our annual surgical eyecamp. there was a time in the first couple of years that we operated inside the vestry of the Anglican Cathedral, Badagry. we owe all we have been able to achieve in Badagry to the Bishop J. Adeyemi, the church and the  people of Badagry. Thank you for letting us serve you.

The Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria in collaboration with Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation  mop up FREE CATARACT SURGERY SERIES 2024.

With our local partner we believe that every patient deserves personalized and compassionate care. We take a patient-centered approach to healthcare, focusing on the unique needs and concerns of each individual patient. Recognizing that our intervention during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the research institute was oversubscribed management decided we undertake a second surgical eye camp to ensure that no-one who is  blind from cataracts in their host communities be left behind unattended to.
